‘Emery House’, built in 1971, still retains its groovy feel and would no doubt be a hit with the characters of That ‘70s Show including Michael Kelso, portrayed by Ashton Kutcher.

A modernist 1971-built house designed by famous architect John Denton is offering a groovy vibe to Ringwood North.

The four-bedroom house at 50 Pine Cres is heritage-listed by Maroondah Council as an “intact early example” of Denton’s work.

His firm Denton Corker Marshall was responsible for iconic projects including the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, 101 Collins Street, Melbourne Museum, Bolte Bridge and Tullamarine Freeway’s Melbourne gateway. They also led the charge on Australia’s embassies in Tokyo, Beijing and Jakarta, Warsaw’s Millennium Plaza and the Stonehenge Visitor Centre and Interpretative Museum.

Known as “Emery House”, the home was originally built for internationally acclaimed graphic designer Garry Emery, who worked on the National Gallery of Victoria, Sydney Opera House’s refurbishment and Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Emery House was awarded a Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ (Victorian Chapter) citation in 1972.

Inside features a mezzanine level, vaulted timber ceilings, slate floors, a small spiral staircase, and a formal lounge room with an open fireplace, plus a study and retreat.

Barry Plant Eastern Group agent Gavin Hoo said a small attic-style children’s play area looking over the dining and kitchen was accessible via a ladder.

“It’s so cool, although the house was built in the ‘70s, everything still works,” Mr Hoo said.

The kitchen itself contains a Miele oven, ample benchspace and pendant lights.

Two of the bedrooms have ensuites and walk-in wardrobes.

In 1985, Denton Corker Marshall completed an extension including bright blue built-in shelving and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to the north-facing deck, alfresco space and established trees.

Mr Hoo said about 30 guests could comfortably gather in the outdoor domain.

“It’s a big area that people could entertain in or have friends over,” he added.

Other highlights include a secure double carport, gas heating, ceiling fans and plenty of storage options.

Emery House is for sale with a $1.28m asking price.
